Risk Of Calicivirus Infection in Rabbits

There is currently a state-wide shortage of the Rabbit Vaccination Cylap.
The manufacturer expects delays to lead into January 2022 meaning your rabbit may become over for their vaccine.

Vaccination is the best way to protect rabbits from Calicivirus however during this time of vaccination shortage, the following precautions should be taken to help to reduce the risk of infection:

  • Keep your pet rabbit indoors
  • Rabbit-proof your backyard to prevent access by wild rabbits
  • Regularly decontaminate equipment and materials including cages, hutches, bowls etc, with either 10% bleach or 10% sodium hydroxide. Be sure to properly rinse these objects and allow the smell to disappear before reintroducing to your rabbit.
  • Clean hutches and replace hay daily
  • Limit contact between and handling of unfamiliar pet rabbits
  • Decontaminate hands, shoes and clothing after handling rabbits other than your own
  • Control fleas (You can use Revolution monthly (for rabbits under 2.5kg use Revolution Puppy & Kitten -pink and for rabbits over 2.5kg use Revolution Cat -blue)
  • Control insects (especially flies) as much as possible both indoors and outdoors
  • Remove uneaten food from around rabbits on a daily basis

Calicivirus causes Rabbit Haemorrhagic Disease and can remain in the environment for an extended period. If you have any concerns, questions or if you are worried about your pet rabbit then please do not hesitate to phone us on 8373 0301
